2024 INTERIOR DESIGN TREND PREDICTIONS

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2024?

In our view, interior design trends change as quickly as fashion and that’s one of the reasons we find them so exciting. We are seeing some fresh developments unfolding and we expect them to take hold for real in 2024. In this article, we'll explore the top interior design trends that are set to shape our homes and spaces in 2024.

BRINGING NATURE INDOORS

In 2024, the integration of nature into interior spaces takes center stage. Biophilic design, characterized by the incorporation of natural elements such as plants, natural light, and sustainable materials, is gaining momentum. The goal is to create environments that not only look stunning but also contribute to overall well-being by fostering a connection with nature.

In Southern California, indoor/outdoor living has been a way of life, with homeowners installing full-wall retractable doors to merge the outside with the inside. We expect this element of home design to take hold throughout the country in 2024.

And, with Macrame having made a comeback, houseplants will inevitably become a staple of chic homes in 2024. We’ve seen moss, herbs, and succulents take center stage in our interiors, but this year bigger house plants and interior trees will replace them.

SUSTAINABLE AND ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN

Sustainability is not just a trend; it's a way of life. Interior design in 2024 will see a surge in eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient appliances, and recycled furnishings. Designers are increasingly mindful of their environmental impact, promoting a more sustainable and responsible approach to creating beautiful spaces.

The sustainability mindset paves the way for more creative interiors, by encouraging homeowners and designers to source recycled furniture and antiques. And, we are thrilled to see more creativity and variation in furnishings as designers and homeowners use found and curated pieces to furnish their spaces.

MAXIMALISM ~ BOLD COLORS AND PATTERNS

Say goodbye to minimalism; 2024 embraces the bold and the vibrant. Maximalism makes a comeback with rich colors, intricate patterns, and eclectic decor. Designers are encouraging clients to express their personalities through unique, eye-catching elements that make a statement and add character to every room.

As we emerge from an era when neutrals reigned (I.E.: all white kitchens) this trend is beginning with rich saturated earthy colors, like browns and deep burgundies.  “Oxblood” is showing up on kitchen cabinets, furniture, upholstery, and our walls. And, deep brown upholstery is suddenly en vogue.  We predict this palette will eventually lead us to more jewel-toned palettes — hello navy, emerald green, and deep orange.

FLEXIBLE AND MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SPACES

With the rise of remote work and flexible lifestyles, interior design in 2024 emphasizes adaptable spaces. Furniture and layouts that can easily transform to serve multiple functions are on the rise. This trend caters to the need for versatility, enabling individuals to create workspaces, gyms, and relaxation zones within the same area.

As homeowners need to get more functionality out of the same square footage, we expect the Murphy beds and doors to make an appearance. And, we imagine designers will try to find design-forward ways to make the “cloffice” work. For those of you who don’t know, the “cloffice” is a closet that can be used as an office.

ARTISANAL AND HANDCRAFTED PIECES

In an age of mass production, there's a growing appreciation for the craftsmanship of handmade and artisanal items. Interior designers are incorporating unique, handcrafted pieces into their projects, adding a touch of authenticity and individuality to each space. And, sourcing used items for sustainability reasons will mean more objects and furnishings with a story, which will bring more depth to our interiors.  And, this is good news for artists.  One-of-a-kind works will be more coveted.

SOFT LINES & INTERESTING SILHOUETTES

We’ve enjoyed the rounded furniture trend and we think there’s more to come. In 2024, furniture lines and silhouettes are transforming, blending classic elements with modern sensibilities. Embracing a departure from the clean lines of previous years, 2024 welcomes the resurgence of curved and organic shapes.

Furniture with soft, rounded edges and flowing contours adds a sense of comfort and visual interest to spaces. From sofas and chairs to coffee tables and accessories, expect to see more fluid and inviting forms.
